The distinction gives you more clout and the more boards you get a trusted type status it follows you around. It depends on the board(s), but you still need 3 VIPs to vouch. Depending how well known throughout the community the 3 VIPs are that vouch we may accept their word. There are plenty of well known VIPs/VETs throughout the community who aren't members here, its handled on a case by case basis.
